Neurobiological and Psychosocial Considerations in the Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of ADHD, BPD and Complex PTSD

The accurate differentiation between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),  Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and complex trauma is crucial due to the significant overlap in their symptoms and the potential for misdiagnosis. Misdiagnosis can lead to unnecessary long-term suffering, disrupted relationships, poor social engagement, and inappropriate treatment options. This presentation explores the neurobiological and psychosocial factors involved in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of adults with ADHD.

The presentation delves into the neurobiological considerations, such as myelination, fronto-limbic circuitry, and neurotransmitter deficiencies, highlighting the differences and similarities between ADHD and cPTSD. Additionally, the impact of developmental trauma on both disorders is examined, emphasising the role of early-life adverse events as shared risk factors.
The presentation also addresses the importance of thorough diagnostic investigation and the need for a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. The implications for treatment, such as the potential use of stimulant medication for BPD and the critical role of stabilisation in psychiatric settings, are discussed.
In conclusion, this presentation underscores the necessity of revisiting how we conceptualise and approach the diagnoses of ADHD, BPD and cPTSD to ensure accurate assessment and effective treatment.
